Profile of the Department

The Department of English and Research Centre enjoys a special status of being the only department which has access to every student in the college at the Under Graduate level. Flipping through the pages of history, the Department of English and Research Centre is really proud to have left many indelible imprints and crossed many milestones with, starting of BA English in 1969, MA English in 1979. The introduction of M.Phil English in 2013 increased the uniqueness and the prestige of the Department. In the same year, the Department has also been upgraded to a Research Centre by the Alagappa University, Karaikudi.

The Department of English and Research Centre endeavors to offer holistic education by teaching and training the students in using English effectively. It aspires to make the students employable.

• To introduce students to the mechanics of research.
• To help them acquire both theoretical and hands on experience in writing research papers and thesis.

A string of many distinguished academic achievements, the department can boast of, listing from M.Phil scholars, grabbing the University First Rank by 1) R.Jothimani,2) S.Bhuvana and K.Mahalakshmi, securing the Second Rank each. Notwithstanding this, our Research Centre, beaming with unique higher academic status in the entire college has produced four doctorates, which is yet another golden footprints created in the sands of time. The list of rank holders both in UG and in PG in the years past are tagged in as per the bullets enlisted by the College NAAC Committee. The faculty members of our department are in no way inferior to others in stamping their credits. Out of 8 faculty members, 7 are Ph.d holders. The remaining one also is pursuing her Ph.d.

Escalating both the department and the faculty members thus, is not an end but is a beginning of many such laurels and credentials which the Department of English and Research Centre envisions to achieve in future to offer at the feet of our founder. The Department of English is in fact, highly indebted to the following list of senior retired faculty members, without whose immense contributions, the Department today can’t boast of anything concrete. The Department in fact beams with pride to record that it has housed three faculty members who excelled as Principals contributing their might in making the College highly competent on equal footing with its city counter-parts. Of all the credits that have been etched hitherto, it is one highly noteworthy feature which beams as a glistening plume in the crest of the department. Ms .R.Kalpagam, a member of our department ruled the roost as an exemplary Principal of our College for more than 30 years. She was instrumental in making the College a recipient of many coveted awards like Best College Award twice, Award for Communal Harmony, and for the innumerable awards that are arraying and adorning in Principal’s Cabin.

Our Department Library has a good stock of nearly thousand books for the benefit of the students.

National Seminar

25.08.2014 ear-marked a Red-Letter Day for the Department of English and Research Centre, as it gained the attention of the entire College shedding its flash lights flooded on a One-Day National Seminar on Indian Diasporic Literature: A Conflict between the Joy of Belonging and the Trauma of Alienation sponsored by University Grants Commission.

The Seminar, the first of its kind in the entire history of the College was organized, inviting distinguished Resource Persons from our neighboring states with an aim to highlight the sense of displacement and the discomfort of displaced communities in an alien land. It provided valuable guidelines to all the participants across the country to comprehend the crisis experienced by immigrant writers. The major themes selected were Search for Identity and Self-hood, East-West Encounter, Feminist Perspectives, Cultural Transaction and Multiculturalism, Sense of Alienation and Rootlessness, A Fusion of Diversities etc., A Book with ISBN,edited by our Department with the title Indian Diasporic Literature: A Conflict between the Joy of Belonging and the Trauma of Alienation was published on the same day.

The Inaugural Function of English literary and Debating Society was conducted on 28.01.2014 at 10.30 am. Dr.V.Vinoth Kumar, Associate Prof of English, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli was the distinguished Chief Guest. He spoke at length on the basics of English and explained in detail about the importance of LSRW. He further stressed the importance of developing the basic skills of English and their applications in day today usages.








    

PG Association- A Report (2013-14)

TThe Inaugural Function of PG Association (English) was conducted on 28.01.2014 at 2.00 pm. Dr.V.Vinoth Kumar, Associate Prof of English, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli was the distinguished Chief Guest. He spoke on the topic ‘Introduction to Post-Colonial Theories’. He explained the various concepts of post-colonial theorists. Various themes of post-colonial literature like Assimilation, , Hybridity, Diaspora, and Subaltern were discussed in detail.








A report (2015 – 2016)

The Election of office bearers for the English Literary and Debating Society and PG Association was held on 31.07.15. Principal Dr. S.Ramuthai was the President, Mrs. S.R.Vanitha was the Vice-President. N. Pitchammal III B.A (Eng) was elected as the Secretary. V. Mantra II (B.Com) was elected as the Joint-Secretary. R.Tharani I B.A (Eng) and S.Archana I B.Sc (Mat) was Elected as the Committee Members.

Students of the Under- graduate and Post- graduate courses participated in various competitions like Essay Writing, Verse Writing, Oratorical and Poetry Recitation organized by the English Literary and Debating Society and PG Association on 03.09.15.

Students participated in the various creative writing competitions conducted by the Shakespeare Institute of English Studies, Chennai. Certificates were sent by the institute and distributed to the participants. Eight students participated in the “All India Essay Writing Event-2015” conducted by UN Information Centre, New Delhi and Sri Ram Chandra Mission on the topic “The Man who has no Inner Life is a slave to his Surroundings”. Inaugural Function of English Literary and Debating Society was held on 01.10.15 at 10.30 a.m. Dr. S.Geetha, Head and Asso. Prof. Department of English, Fatima College was the Chief Guest. She delivered a speech on “English for Enhancing Employability”. She insisted the importance of spoken English. She encouraged the students to improve their communicative skills which will be more useful for them to face the challenges at the portal of employment.

PG Association- Report (2015-2016)

PG Literary Association Inaugural Function was held on 01.10.15 at 2.30 p.m. Dr. S.Geetha, Head and Asso. Prof. Department of English, Fatima College was the Chief Guest. She delivered a speech on ‘Post-Colonial Themes in Contemporary Literature”. She explained the concepts of many post-colonial theorists. Various themes of post-colonial literature like Assimilation, Appropriation, Hybridity, Diaspora, Alterity and Subaltern were discussed in detail that helped the students to comprehend the different trends and techniques of many modern writers easily.

The activities of the Under Graduate Association were inaugurated on 14.02.17 by Dr.C.Isaac Jebastine, Professor and Head, Department of English and Foreign Languages, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. He gave a special lecture on “Proficiency of English and Women Empowerment and Employment”. He stressed the importance of LSRW (Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing) for proficiency of English. Students came to know the Listening techniques through his lecture. One of his notable techniques is “What I hear I forget, what I see I remember, what I do I Know”. Again he re-insisted on listening skill and asked the students to listen to speak and listen to practice. In the second skill of Speaking skill, students learnt how to merge their ideas and thoughts to speak fluently. Later he stressed the importance of Reading and advised the students to English newspaper daily. At the end he asked the students to write at least one page per day to practice Writing skill. Then he explored the Mechanics of writing, and advised the students to imitate the sentence of great writers

As other part of activities, Department of English and Research Centre conducted Essay Writing Competition, Verse Writing Competition, Oratorical Competition and Poetry Recitation. The topics given to the various competitions are:

Students actively participated in these competitions and the winners were awarded prizes.

Department of English and Research Centre sent more than thirty write-ups written by Under Graduate students to Shakespeare Institute of English Studies. A.Afra from III B.A. English secured third prize in Creative Writing Competition and won the Bronze medal. Many other participants brought laurels to the department.

The activities of the Post Graduate Association were inaugurated on 14.02.17 by Dr.C.Isaac Jebastine, Professor and Head, Department of English and Foreign Languages, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. He gave a special lecture on “Literature and its relevance to life”. He started his lecture by giving different definitions to life. As a staunch follower of Shakespeare, he brought Shakespeare’s quotes to give the definition of life like, “Life is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”.

Then he dealt with at length the various approaches of life. He categorized the different types of novels and explained how literature plays a pivotal role to educate morale to the readers. Students and listeners got insight by his sayings, “Feelings and emotions need to be fostered in a proper way”. Then he discussed poetry and its eternal qualities of appealing, consoling, and comforting the readers’ mind when he is dejected in life. By discussing Chaucer’s Prologue to Canterbury Tales he categorized the virtuous person and the wicked one. He enlightened the students to speak briefly with gentle words and act as cultured and civilized individuals. At the end of his lecture, everyone got inspired by the sayings of Harindranath Chattobadhyaya ( an Indian English poet)

Report ( 2017-2018 )

The Election of the Office bearers for the English Literary and Debating Society was held on 2. 8.17. Principal Dr. S. Ramuthai was the President. Ms. S.P. Sharanya was the vice-president. K.Thangaroja of III B.com was elected as the secretary; A. Pavithra Devi of II B.A English was elected as the Joint-Secretary; R.Aiswarya of I B.A., English and C.Divya of I B.Sc Chemistry were elected as the committee members.

The Inaugural function of the English Literary and Debating Society was held on 27.9.17 Mr. D.R. Edwin Christy, Asst. Prof of English, St. Joseph’s College was the Chief Guest. He delivered a speech on “Communicative Competence - The Master Key to Success “. He insisted the students to learn the English language through listening. He stressed the fact that one has to develop a curious mind by concentrating on the pronounciation and style. He emphasized the need of peer group discussion in English which will enable then them to learn from one another. He summarized that ‘English’ language and the art of proper communication is the need of the hour.

Students from our college enrolled themselves enthusiastically for the competitions conducted by the Shakespeare Institute of English studies, Chennai. They participated in the various competitions like Essay writing, Verse-Writing, Drawing and painting. Certificates were sent by the Institute and distributed to the students.

English Literary and Debating Society conducted various competitions for this academic year on 23.01.18. Various Competitions like Essay Writing, Verse-Writing, Oratorical and Poetry Recitation were conducted. Students of the Under Graduate and Post Graduate participated in the competitions. The Prize Winners will receive their certificates and prize on the College Day Celebration.

Students of the undergraduate and postgraduate courses participated in various competitions like essay writing, verse writing, oratorical and poetry recitation organized by the English literary and debating society and PG Association on 20.09.2018

Students from our college participated in the various creative writing competitions conducted by the Shakespeare Institute of English studies Chennai. M.SiyamalaM.PhilEnglish had secured the first prize in the essay writing competition. certificateswere sentby the Institute to the participants and distributed to the participants.

Inaugural function of English literary and debating society was held on 20.09. 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Dr.S.Joseph Arul Jayaraj , Associate professor and Head department of English St Joseph’s college Trichy was the chief guest. He delivered a speech on “Communicative English and its Relevance Today”. He insisted on the importance of learning English. He inspired the students with the stories. He reiterated on the need of hard work which the students have to put in for learning the language .He also pointed out the need to improve their pronunciation.

PG Association report 2018 to 2019

PG literary Association ,Inaugural function was held on 20.09.2018 at 2:00 p.m. Dr S Joseph Arul Jayaraj,Associate professor and Head department of English, St Joseph’s college Trichy was the chief guest.He delivered a speech on “subaltern literature”.He clearly explained various theories of subaltern literature and he focused on the writings of Virginia woolf’sa“A Room of one’s Own”.It helped the students to comprehend the literary theories and theorists . The chief guest highlighted the sufferings of The deprived, oppressed , neglected and marginalized sections of the society



Parent Teachers Association Meeting Report (2019-20)

PTA meeting for the year 2018-19 was held on 13.03.2019 at L1 hall at 10.30a.m. The program began with prayer song followed by the college song. Dr. S.Ramuthai, Principal of the college addressed the gathering. At the beginning she thanked the parents for their presence amidst their busy schedule. She insisted that ‘practice’ is the only way to set right these faults. She further advised to maintain discipline and avoid unnecessary talking to improve their concentration on studies. She encouraged group study and recommended periodical learning instead of bulk preparation on a single night. She condemned the practice of copying. She contrasted the role of teacher with their parents’. She alarmed everyone, the present system of period of study. She shared one of our college student’s pathetic story of lack of attention on her studies. Finally she wished everyone to get good scoring in the ensuing university examinations.

Next to her Dr.M.Vennila, Head and Associate Professor of English and Research Centre welcomed the gathering and expressed her thanks for the parents’ participation in PTA meeting. She advised the students to channelize their energy in a proper way for study. On her advise students knew about the present scenario of outer world. She insisted everyone to produce leave letter on their absence to the college and asked to dedicate themselves to their studies. Further she wanted everyone to shoulder the burden of their mother by sharing some household chores. She sought co-operation from the parents to bring out the temperament, health condition and also the time of departure and arrival of the students at home. She warned everyone not to rely others except their parents and not to encourage flattering words and gifts from the unknown persons.

Dr.R.C.Sheila Royappa, Associate Professor of English greeted everyone. She condemned the use of mobile phones, watching T.V. and spending precious time by chating unnecessarily with the peer groups. She asked everyone to plan meticulously with scheduled time table for planning and studying. She interacted with parents and gave solutions to the parents’ doubts.




Demand and interactions of the parents:
• Many of the parents requested to alarm them of the absence of their ward.
• Some requested to give extra training for spoken English
• One of the parents pleaded to conduct PTA meeting twice in a year (per semester)
Later refreshment were offered to the parents and they were directed to meet the class teacher of their ward individually to discuss and know about the progress of the students in detail.

Vote of thanks was given by Dr.SR.Vanitha, Assistant Professor of English. She thanked everyone for their visit to PTA meeting. She thanked staff members for their sincere effort to bring the meeting to success.

Thus PTA meeting established a good rapport with the parents. Class teacher explained and clarified all the doubts raised by the parents and also insisted the responsibilities of the parents to have a close watch on their ward. Thus with good understanding the meeting came to close.

STARTUP CELLS 2018-19

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND RESEARCH CENTRE
A REPORT


On behalf of Startup cells many meetings were conducted by the Department of English and Research Centre to support the students to become a successful entrepreneur. A motivating session was conducted on 18.09.18.Ms.K. Manjula, Asst.Prof. English ,Dr. Umayal Ramanathan College for Women, Karaikudi was the chief guest. She motivated the students to become asuccessful woman. She created awareness among the students about the source of investment and raw materials for their usefulness. She explained that students should be self-equipped and self-employed.

A meeting was conducted on 04.02.19. Mrs. I. Stella Mary, Proprietor, Reshma Beauty Parlour, Pallathur had delivered a lecture on “Entrepreneurship and its Role”. She insisted that students should become successful entrepreneurs by mastering various courses like Tailoring, Embroidery and Handicraft, thus an individual can become highly self-reliant. She clearly highlighted that “self-help is the best help”. Add On Course: Professional Skills in English (2014-2015) A Report

Add On Course is an added special feature of our department which ensures a holistic development of the students with special emphasis on skills in English Language. The Head and Co-ordinator Dr.M.Vennila provided her valuable suggestions in selecting the course, framing the syllabus and evolution and execution of teaching methods and she also extended her complete support in the successful completion of the course. The Add On Course for the year 2014-15 was done on the title Professional Skills in English. Dr.J.Mary Jeyanthi, Assistant Professor of English was in charge of handling the classes. Classes were taken after the regular working hours. Within the 90 hours framework, 60 hours for theory and 30 hours for practical sessions were duly allotted. Students’ comprehensive ability was evaluated by conducting examinations and certificates were given for their accomplishment.

Value Added Course : English for Effective Communication (2016-17) A Report

A Value Added Course on English for Effective communication was conducted in the Department of English and Research Centre for the I BA English students in the academic year 2016-17. The Course started on 2nd January2017 and ended on 23rd February 2017. All the sessions were handled by Dr.R.Thangam, Assistant Professor of English. The classes were taken after the regular class hours. After attending, the students learnt how to develop their language skills effectively. Feed back was given by the students and it was satisfactory. Students felt that this Value Added session was much useful for them. After the completion of the course, Certificates were distributed to the students. It is planned to extend this Value Added Training in the next year also with some medium level of application development.

Add On Course: Soft Skills Development (2017-2018) A Report

Department of English and Research Centre organized an Add On Course on Soft Skills Development from February 2018 to March 2018 for the IIIBA English students to provide training and guidance on various aspects of building a career and to assist them in exploring new opportunities. Classes were conducted for the students after their regular hours (3.30pm- 5.30pm) as per the schedule given. On Saturdays six hours practical classes were handled by the staff. The Course paved the way for the enhancement of the communication skills, positive attitude and interview skills.. After the completion of the course, certificates were issued for the students.




2013-2014

UGC sponsored “Career Oriented Programme” has been functioning in Seethalakshmi Achi College for Women, Pallathur for the welfare and betterment of students. This programme has been rooted in 2007 to empower the soft skills of COP students. From the day of its origin it has been guided and supervised by the Head and Co-ordinator Dr. R.C.Sheila Royappa. It gets it’s over all development by the support of its team faculties.

The students were taken to Doordharsan and FM Radio station and other site seeing places. This trip helped them to learn more about Broadcasting and Telecommunication. Following this informative tour the students had an opportunity to hear the motivation lecture given by Dr. Aisha Millath, Department of Alagappa Institute of Management, Alagappa University, Karaikudi.

Following this lecture, the COP organizing committee arranged variety of competitions to the students. Larger amount of students were participated. In essay writing competition, the theme had been given on the spot. The students showed their talent and excelled in their performance. Thus the annual goal of 2013-14 COP programme achieved successfully.

Broadcasting And Telecommunication Centres



2014-2015

UGC Sponsored “Career Oriented Programme” has been functioning in our esteemed institution. This programme has been supervised by the Co-ordinator Dr.R.C.SheilaRoyappa. The classes were handled by the faculty members of Department of English and Research Centre and also by members belonging to other Departments.

Dr. Christopher Ramesh, Assistant Professor of English, Govt. Arts College, Mellur was kindly consented to be the chief guest. He delivered a lecture on “Socio-Economic Empowerment of English Language”.

Coordinator Dr.R.C.SheilaRoyappa, planned to take the final year students to Chennai as their educational trip. They have visited many important places. Chennai is famous for its cultural heritage, monuments and architectural designs. Our students met with a group of foreign visitors. Our students guided those foreign visitors and took them to national monuments, historical sites, and historical districts, religious or archaeological sites.



2015-2016

UGC Sponsored “Career Oriented Programme” has been functioning in our esteemed institution Seethalakshmi Achi College for women, Pallathur since 2007 0nwards. Our COP Co-ordinator Dr.R.C.Sheila Royappa motivates the students every week through her innovative lectures. The faculty members involved in this programme support and guide the students for their future platform of their life. The Students are also inspired by this programme.

A Special Lecture on “Importance of Language Laboratory and Communication Skills” was delivered by Mrs.Y.Ilavarasi, Assistant Professor, B.T.K College of Education, Viralimalai, Pudukkottai. An educational tour was arranged for the COP Students as Tourism Reporting is an integral part of the Syllabus. The COP students were taken to Tanjore which is an important pilgrim centre and a major tourist destination of Tamilnadu.





2016-2017

Career oriented programme is being conducted in our college sponsored by the UGC. Dr R. C. Sheila Royappa, Associate professor of English is the coordinator who is assisted by the staff of the department of English and with the faculties of other departments also.

Students were asked to take seminars under various topics and thus they improved their communicative skills. Students are motivated to prepare a PPT presentation. This method helps to improve their creativity and helps to enhance the stock of vocabulary in them.

As journalism is incorporated in the course syllabus, the COP students were taken to different places, wherein the students could get an opportunity to gain practical knowledge. An educational tour was arranged for the students of COP. This tour covered Theni and the important areas around it. The students visited the nearby village, Veerapandi. The COP students visited Chinnalampatti Arun textiles. There students practically saw the spinning machine which is used for manufacturing 100% cotton materials. By this visit the students learnt a lot of technical as well as new words related to textiles, weaving activities, cloth varieties, production, import and export.

COP certificate distribution function was held on 24.01.2016. Mrs.Komalavalli, Lecturer in English, AnnaiTeresa College of Education was kindly consented to be the Chief Guest and distributed the prizes to the students.





2017-2018

UGC sponsored “Career Oriented Programme” has been functioning in Seethalakshmi Achi College For Women, Pallathur for the welfare and betterment of students. This programme has been rooted in 2007 to empower the soft skills of COP students. Meticulously framed syllabus can help the students to get proficiency in Learning, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills and provide a better portal for their prosperous future. The meticulous preparations of the syllabus as well as continuous and commendable support of the staff members draw the programme to gain success. COP Co-ordinator Dr. Sheila Royappa motivates and guides the students. It gets it’s over all development by the support of its team faculties. Further the personnel of this programme, engage additional outsourcing faculties from outside in order to give the comprehensive development to the students in all aspects.

A special training was given to the COP students in the COP library. Many Audio-Visual training CD cassettes were played to enhance the speaking and listening skills of the students. Students involved in various activities like group discussion, mock interview and so on.

A special lecture was organized by the COP coordinator to insist the importance of language proficiency which is the most needed quality this current scenario demands.





2018-2019

UGC sponsored “Career Oriented Programme” has been functioning in SA College For Women, Pallathur for the welfare and betterment of students. This programme has been rooted in 2007 to empower the soft skills of COP students. As a preliminary activity to develop their writing skills a field trip was made to Athangudi village which was the symbol of tradition. Here the students were asked to write permission letters from both parents and the college. The students were given the work of writing hints and developing them and surveying health and sanitary conditions of the people belong to Athangudi village

Our COP students were taken to the southernmost part of India – The Island town of Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi. There they had the chance to provoke their thought by learning a lot in Dr.AbdulKalam Memorial at Pekarumbu. In order to create awareness about Banking activities and schemes like mobile banking, internet banking, educational loans etc., the Cop students were taken to Indian Overseas Bank Pallathur. There a special lecture was arranged by the Bank manager, Kanadukathan. This lecture was very informative to the students as it comprised almost all the functions related to Banks.





Educational Tour ( 2013-2014)

The final year students of B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com., were taken to Career Oriented Programme tour on 22.02.14 to Kodaikanal as an external activity for their extensive learning. The journey had started at 3.00 a.m. from our college and reached Kodaikanal at 8.00 p.m.

The students were taken to Doordarsan and FM Radio station and other site seeing places. This trip helped them to learn more about Broadcasting and Telecommunication. They came to know about many modern technologies and techniques both in Broadcasting and Telecommunication Centres.

BROADCASTING AND TELECOMMUNICATION CENTRES

Initially they learnt about the media and its uses. They have already gained some information about the role of reporters, journalists etc., this practical experience added value to their pre-conceived knowledge about media and its pivotal role in disseminating important and valuable information in all walks of life in the world.

The students learnt that, the freedom of expression has important implications in broadcasting. This freedom helps everyone to know all the news or incidents that happened in and around. It developed the plurality of voices as well as a diversity of opinion.



This tour provided a platform to them to learn about pluralism. This ensures a wide range of voices and perspectives and criticism. Promoting pluralism among private broadcasting agencies implies a transparent licensing system that seeks a maximize use of the airwaves. They encountered some new information about media issues, its ownership, the evolution of broadcasting, international and constitutional guarantees, the system of regulation of broadcasting, including the appointment of members of regulatory bodies, their powers, and any content and restrictions imposed on broadcasters. Thus the students learnt the governing rules and monopoly activities of media. The students came to know about the role of journalists and news anchors. They learnt about the journalist’s qualification, nature of work, and their responsibility towards the bearer and hearer of information. The students admired how the journalists exhibited even the trivial news or information in an attractive manner with their talent of handling jargons and vocabularies. This made the students to realize the necessity of knowing English language with its vocabulary. They gratefully recalled their prior training undergone in the college. They learnt different kinds of news like soft news, straight news, feature news, spot news, flash news and snap etc… At this juncture they expressed their gratitude to the personnel who arranged for this practical and informative tour.

Here the students knew the next step of media department. Once the information got, the telecaster authentically represent the information via programs in modernistic but not stereotypical. The information got its reality and individuality by the way it is portrayed by the telecaster. Actually the information got a new birth having nose, eyes, ears, soul and heart in the hands of telecaster. This led the students to get thrill and they wanted to participate actively.

Then the students had further learnt about different genres of program in media such as music, sport, children and adult program, medical and beauty tips, general and specific news, cuisine, politics, government policies and general announcements etc….

After getting the general idea about the news and the manner it was telecasted the students practically involved the session. One among them is they listened to the questions raised by the participants those who were engaged in the entertainment program and learnt how to reply and put question again from their answers. It is really a winding session between them and the participants. It developed their listening and speaking skills. Actually it was a brain storming session. The students got puzzled at some who were seeking programming in their own regional language. Any how they had managed to answer. It brought them a lesson to learn other regional, state language too.

Its quiet interesting to the students to learn that in each and every main program, BSNL offered commercial advertisement. At this juncture, they learnt about the need of advertising agencies because Advertising Agencies spend huge sum of money to advertise the company’s product.

Advertising agencies do not like stereotypes advertisements because it would not reach the minds of the listeners. Hence ‘colour blind’ method should be implemented in advertisements while promoting any product. This helped the students to plan themselves the method of fixing the product in the minds of people. Here they came to know the necessity of other sub skills of modulation, creativity, and articulation of jargons and sentences. They fondly recalled their inner campus COP programme and its usefulness.

BSNL covers multicultural program of the society. There by they came to learn diversity of cultures and communities throughout the country. It gave them a greater satisfaction and confidence that they could cover wider audience called cross-cultural programming.

While doing multicultural program they came to hear variety of voices and opinions of participants. Accordingly they learnt the manner of answering their questions and rectifying their doubts. Whenever the needs occur they were engaged in the comprehensive portrayal of information and cleared their doubts. Here they ensured the accuracy of information so that it would give satisfaction for them and the hearer.

The COP students came to know that there are some monoculture programs at particular timings covering a particular group of people. At one instance they were engaged to interview the film personalities and other important celebrities. This gave them a greater challenge initially and at the end they gained confidence to fulfill the needs and interests of the program listeners.

Some of the students were engaged in disseminating the current affairs in and around their country. This brought them the critical attention events in and around their country. For which, they toiled a lot to collect the factual data within a short span of time. It tended them to act quickly, accurately without any bias. It developed the co-ordination among them and kindles our endeavour. Thereby they came to know the development in all the fields especially medical, science, politics, economic and societal happenings.

EDUCATIONAL TOUR 2014-2015

Memories of college Educational trips are among the most prominent of the formative years, largely because they are a welcome break in the routine for both students and teachers. While their purpose is essentially to educate, they are also being a fun bonding experience for everyone involved. The trip can reinforce what a teacher has been instructing in class about a subject and help students understand the topic better. Teachers turn trips into mobile classrooms, instructing students to collect data then quizzing them or assigning a project based on what they learnt during the trip. Taking the students into a new environment gives them the experience of travelling in a group and teaches them to be respectful of the locations they visit.

Students act to visit a place to which they have never been before. This can be particularly advantageous to students who are less fortunate and do not have the opportunity to travel. Students who go on educational trips find that they want to learn more about the subjects on which the trip focused. The types of memories that the educational trips create called “episodic memories”, helps the individuals to retain information for longer periods. Going on a trip means more than simply leaving the college grounds. Educational trips should always have a major educational element, but the impact of the educational trips can extend much further. The importance of the educational trips includes giving students the chance to build closer bonds with their classmates, experience new environments and enjoy a day away from the classroom. Students may be able to spend much of the educational trip in small groups, observing, chatting and learning about each other.

For this academic year, as the III year students were prescribed with a curriculum called Advanced Diploma Course in their VI semester, COP, Co-Ordinator Dr.R.C.Sheila Royappa, planned to take the final year students to Chennai as their educational trip. They have visited many important places. Chennai is famous for its cultural heritage, monuments and architectural designs.

Valluvarkottam is a popular monument in Chennai, India which is dedicated to the Classical Tamil Poet, Philosopher and Saint Thiruvalluvar. The monument was constructed in 1976. The construction of ValluvarKottam was finest way to pay homage to this great and renowned personality as well as his tremendous collection of magnificent works. The architectural pattern of ValluvarKottam is like a temple chariot (39m high) inside which there is a huge store effigy of the Saint Thiruvalluvar. A very unique feature of the ValluvarKottam is that it stands baseless, without the support of any pillar. The students were really thrilled with this visit.



Mahabalipuram is an ancient historic town and was a bustling sea port of ancient Indian traders. The monuments are mostly rock-cut and monolithic and constitute the early stages of Dravidian architecture. They are constructed by cave temples. The most shocking thing was that, in 2004, the Indian Ocean Tsunami washed away tons of coastal sand exposing structures including a granite lion and an elephant relief.

B.M.Birla Planetarium is a large planetarium in Chennai providing a virtual tour of the night sky and holding cosmic shows on a specially perforated hemispherical aluminium inner doom. It is located in the Periyar Science and Technology Centre Campus which houses eight galleries, namely Physical Science, Electronics and Communication, Energy, Life Science, Innovation Transport, International Dolls and Children and Material Science with over 500 exhibits. Learning about various planets made very interesting. Students involved with great enthusiasm. They were made to observe 3D movie in the planetarium.

Guindy Snake Park is India’s first reptile park. It is home to a wide range of snakes such as Adders, Pythons, Vipers, Cobras and other reptiles. The park also has an aquarium of water snakes and turtles. In 2008-10, the park’s research lab implemented a research for developing a snake repellent to protect from snakes commonly found in desert region. The park also undertakes reptile survey in various parts of the state. This visit created a great zeal of enthusiasm in our students to learn more about reptiles.

Here, our students were interviewed by media channel called Vasanth Channel. They were made to participate in a programme shooting called Gala Gala Galatta which was telecasted in a Sunday episode on 22.3.15.Really this was a very entertaining exposure for our students.

EXHILARATING EXPERIENCE IN CROCODILE BANK TRUST MADRAS

Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology, is a reptile zoo. It is India’s leading institution for herpeto faunal conversation research and education. The bank is the first Crocodile breeding centre in Asia. The activities of this zoo insisted our students to conserve nature and natural resources in the broadest sense.

The Marina Beach, covered with glittering golden sand and a clear strip of blue sea, is among the most magnificent beaches in India. It is said to be the second longest beach in the world. Apart from enjoying on the beach, there are many historical monuments built at the junction of pathway stand. Some of them include Annadurai and M.G. Ramachandran memorials, statues of heroes from Tamil culture, Indo Saracenic buildings, monuments of Tamil Scholars, Patriots and famous personalities including Mahatma Gandhi and Subash Chandra Bose. Those monuments made our students recall and remember our history and heritage.

Our students met with a group of foreign visitors. Our students guided those foreign visitors and took them to national monuments, historical sites, and historical districts, religious or archaeological sites. As our students are well-versed in the history of the site or monument, they offered visitors an interesting description of the location, including its history and what effect it has had on modern society. In addition they answered visitor’s questions. This helped our students to develop good communication skills.

Educational Tour 2016-17

An educational tour was arranged for the students of COP. This tour covers Theni and the important area around it.

The educational trip should always have a major educational element, but the impact of educational trips can be extended much further. It gives students the chance to build closer bonds with their classmates, experience new environments. Theni has started emerging as a prominent tourist destination of South India. A perfect blend serenity spirituality, nature and activities, Theni is sure to lure you with its vibrate and spellbinding spirit. One of the most prominent tourist attractions in Theni happens to be The Vaigai dam built across the Vaigai river.

Located across the Vaigai river, the dam is nearly 111 feet high. There is a beautiful garden located just near to the dam known as Little Brindhaban. This garden often materialized as a picnic spot and it is a great place for the students to relax.

Among otherthings, students enjoyed visiting places as suruli falls and kumbakarai falls gushing down from a great height, the falls are worth a sight to behold.



It is located 56 km from Theni. It is a two stage cascading waterfalls. It is a great view and rooms are available for the students to change their dress. It is a chilling experience for the students. They enjoyed the clean water.

Then the students visited the next nearby village, Veerapandi. It is a panchayat town in Theni district. There they had a chance to visit the Veerapandi Gowmari Amman Temple. This is 14th century temple. It was built by the pandiya king Veerapandi. It is nearly 8 km from Theni. It is situated on the banks of the Mullai river. The temple is 200 years old. Students get excited to see these monuments.

COP students visited Chinnalampatti Arun textiles. Students learnt about the spinning machine which is used for manufacturing 100% cotton materials. There they combed compact yarn from the 40s to 100s for both knitting and weaving for high-quality fabrics. All individual cones are passed through ultraviolet rays for detection of shades variation. Students learnt many things there.

COP Students were taken towards the grapes farm in Theni. There was a grape farm on the way to Megamalai nearest to Cumbam. Students had the chance to walk around and learnt about grape cultivation. They had taken pictures around it. It was a great and sweet experience for them.

Educational Tour 2018-2019

In today’s educational system, the importance of educational tour for college students can’t be overlooked. Educational tours provide students with a great opportunity to learn in an informal environment, while building long-lasting relationships with other students and teachers. It’s even more important for college students, who are setting out in an unfamiliar world to grow professionally. Depending on the course students are taking in college, there are different kinds of field tours focusing on History, Heritage, Business, Science, Architecture, Nature etc., As the students are undergoing career oriented programmes educational tours help them immensely to develop their personality as well as their perception about the world outside.

A.P.J.Abdul Kalam Memorial : Our COP students were taken to the southernmost part of India – The Island town of Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi. There they had the chance to provoke their thought by learning a lot in Dr.Abdul Kalam Memorial at Pekarumbu.



The students realized Dr. Kalam’s teachings live through this monument and ignites the belief in them.

Dhanushkodi:

Later the students were taken to the Dhanushkoti seashore. The students were spell bound to look the grief stricken and devastated remainings of the town there. Some students wrote poems on Dhanushkodi’s miserable condition. Each and every student wrote their travelogues and presented them in the college later.

Rameshwaram and its Historical Excellence:

Our students had a great opportunity to visit religious places filled with historical values and spiritual spectrum respectively Ramarpadham and Lord Shiva’s temple at Rameshwaran. There they worshiped with great reverence and adorned the beauty of the architecture. They took note of even the minute details in the shrines in their travelogues which paved an ample way to promote their writing skills and vocabulary related to architecture. They also learnt about the preservative measures undertaken by the government to conserve these ancient monuments through the archaeology department. They also saw the inscriptions in the temple which were the mute witness of the past and through which the values are conserved and transferred to the generations to come. The education tour was accomplished with great knowledge and it was really a feast to both the eyes and the eye of wisdom. The Cop students took note of every minute detail they observed and presented them in their travelogues with grandeur. The travelogues were collected and evaluated on the parameters of originality, style of writing, presentation, etc., The students were also encouraged to write a letter to their kith and kin about this educational tour.
